Buffalo Gap Camp Facilities & Amenities

Buffalo Gap Camp is now available for individual cabin rentals, campsite and facilities rentals as as well as available for group events such as sports camps, youth camps, music jamborees, dance groups, weddings and anniversaries, reunions and other special events. Book on-line, on-site or contact us about renting any portion of the camp.

Located on 117 acres, secluded amid the mountains of West Virginia, the camp is in a valley between two mountains, Slane's Knob and Sandy Ridge. Buffalo Gap Camp provides an idyllic setting for a variety of small and large functions, ranging from retreats, youth or family events, meditation to business seminars, workshops, weddings, dance and music events.

The Camp is now open to the public for advanced Reservations and Walk-In's.

Overview of Buffalo Gap Camp Facilities

117 Developed Acres: comprising 15 sectors of Camp with green rolling hills, fields, meadows, big forest and mountain vistas.
Cabins: 16 Uphill and 17 Downhill cabins with total sleeping capacity (beds) for 308 - picnic tables, benches, and fire-pits near or at each.
Dormitory / Hostel Private Rooms: The camp includes 18 private hostel rooms that vary from twin bed for one to sleeping for three. Very affordable options for all.
Campsites: 14 campsites developed in Cold Stream Park South -- about 10 more wooded and creek-side in Cold Stream Park North. Park and Hike sites developed along Buffalo Springs Park East and West -- abouut 16 Hike In or 4WD sites that include fire rings. Horse friendly, 4WD friendly.
RV-sites: Primitive RV parking in Cold Stream Park South. Opposite campsites near Cold Stream Creek. Picnic tables, benches, fire rings common to area.

Entertainment Pavilion: A 3,800 square foot covered Entertainment Pavilion and stage, located at Center Camp.
Gymnasium: The 10,000 square foot Swisher Hall Gymnasium with 8 basketball nets, 2 full court, stage, 200 chairs, and indoor gathering space for large group events
Commercial Kitchen and Dining Hall: A Commercial Kitchen with Dining Hall seating for 208+. Cooking capability for 350+. Staff / Menu available for large groups
Wood-Fired Sauna and Lake: A wood fired sauna on one end of a 3 acre lake with white sand beach and a beach house on the other end. A dock area is at the Lake's center to kayak, canoe, tube, or swim to.
Fishing: Catch and release the whole lake. Large mouth bass (record size), massive carp, blue gill, catfish...

Cacapon River access: near town of Capon Bridge -- bring your flat bottom, canoe, kayak or innertube.
Hiking and Biking: Recently added dirt hiking roads beyond the Uphill Cabins in Buffalo Springs Park East and West. Ideal for mountain bikes, hikers, horse riding, botany lovers, and includes 16 primitive hike in campsites, all with fire rings.
Community Bon-Fire: A large community bon-fire area to the side of the beach house on the lake. Saturday evening bon-fires are a regular occurrance.
Recreational Activities: Beach volleyball, horse shoes, basketball and other recreational activities throughout.
Horse Riding / Lessons: The Camp is lining up a Horse Riding / Lessons facilitator and should have details and rates very soon.

Restaurants / Entertainment: Just 5 miles to the quaint town of Capon Bridge, WV with restaurants and shopping. Just 20 minutes to Winchester, VA.
Shower Houses: Men's and Women's shower houses and port-a-potties throughout, cleaned and sanitized each week.
Firewood: Abundant firewood supplied near check-in area at the Dining Hall for your nightly fires -- just $5.00 per generous container.
Wildlife / Botany: Abundant aquatic and land-based wild-life, flowering plants, magnificent mushrooms, fungi, mosses, and a great variety of tree species.

Our 33 Private Cabin Facilities
(308 total beds inside 33 cabins)

The 16 Uphill Cabins:

The 16 Uphill are open air cabins that offers a combined sleeping capacity of 160.
The 16 Uphill Cabins were built in the 1950's when the facility was used as a children's summer camp.
The screened sides permit the flow of air. The accommodations are combination of single beds and bunks, Separate shower facilities are provided outside, but each includes a sink and commode.

Cabins 19-32 - two separated halves, each with separate entrance/lock, with a sleeping capacity of 10 per cabin. Half bathrooms in each cabin (commode/sink).
Cabins 33-34 - two separated halves, each with separate entrance/lock, each sleeps 10 and has full bathrooms (showers/commode/sink)
Shower Houses - two on the uphill side. One for Women, one for Men.

The Hilton
4 private entrance cabins in 4 quadrants.

The 17 Downhill Cabins:

The 17 Downhill Cabins offer a combined sleeping capacity of 148 and are fully enclosed.
The downhill cabins have windows and include private showers / full baths.

Cabin 3A & Cabin 3B - dormitory style rooms, sleeping capacity of 8 each; full bathrooms.
Cabin 4A/4B & Cabin 5A/5B - 2 private bedrooms each adjoined by a furnished foyer, full bathrooms. Sleeping capacity of 6 each.
The Hilton - Cabins 6,7,8, and 9: a furnished foyer connects fourteen private rooms and four full bathrooms; all rooms can be heated. This partitioned cabin has a sleeping capacity of 5 to 7 per private quadrant/cabin and a combined total sleeping capacity of 25+ in 14 private rooms.
Cabins 10-13 - four dormitory style rooms with full bathrooms, sleeping capacity is 10 per cabin.
Cabins 14-17 - four dormitory style rooms with full bathrooms, sleeping capacity is 10 per cabin.
Cabin 18 - large open room, sleeps 15 in bunk/twins or used as a meeting area; two full bathrooms. Lots of chairs for meetings.

Our Eco-Friendly Campground Facilities
(Campsites and RV-Sites)

40 Campsites for 2010:

All of our campsites are Park and Hike-In. We have primitive campsites in four distinct regions, each with fire-rings, many with nearby access to picnic area with tables and charcoal grill pit areas (coming soon). All sites first come, first served.

Cold Stream Creek Park South:
This large creek front field region is accessible by car from Rubenstein Rd. We have created 14 creek front primitive campsites, each with fire rings and all close to 2 bridge crossings that include 8 picnic tables in a common area.

Cold Stream Creek Park North:
This region of the campground is less developed and more wooded. It is accessible by parking past Swisher Hall Gymnasium and walking down to campsites located near Cold Stream Creek. There are approximately 10 sites, each with fire rings.

Buffalo Springs Park West:
These 6 horse / 4WD friendly campsites are accessible by parking around Swisher Hall gymnasium and hiking along the road past the small red stage. It is located close to the new shower house about to be constructed. All sites have fire rings.

Buffalo Springs Park East:
These 10 horse / 4WD friendly campsites are accessible by parking in the Common Area or near the uphill cabins. Park and hike in -- a bit of a rigorous hike, but rewarded by privacy and great views of the valley below. Each site has a fire ring.

Primitive RV Sites for 2010:

Primitive RV sites (no hook-up'), are currently available in Cold Stream Creek Park South, off Rubenstein Rd. / Joe Shanholtz Rd. This region of the campground is accessible from Rubenstein Rd. Park in the large field area and utilize any campsites that you choose. It is not recommended that you park close to the waterfront campsites as the ground is soft from the water table being high.

The 3800 square foot Entertainment Pavilion was constructed in the mid-1980s using flanged post and beam construction techniques. It will accommodate about 200 people plus a bandstand or small stage for performers (stage always present). A row of church pew style benches wraps around the perimeter. It includes a 32 channel sound board, amps, speakers, 6 mics, and a complete sound system for our concert performers. Centrally located, the pavilion is the focal point of the camp.

Swisher Hall Gymnasium

Any activity that needs a large indoor space can be accommodated as Swisher Hall has room for all (10,000 square feet!). This large space sports two full basketball courts and plenty of room for entertaining. The hall measures an astounding 100' x 100' and the full contingent of 250+ campers can be on the floor at one time! It has window drops that allow full air flow or complete closure along all 4 sides of the building.

The Dining Hall / Commercial Kitchen:

The Dining Hall serves up delicious meals to hungry attendees. It offers a commanding view of the lake. This space can also be used for meetings and other events.
With seating up to 208, great for large groups, workshops, and conferences.
Food service / buffet meals available for large groups.
Weekend food concessions coming soon -- compliments of Gateway Restaurnat from Capon Bridge.
Camp Check-In/Registration located here. Vending machines and coffee available 24/7.
Wi-fi hot-spot --bring your lap-top and have some coffee and surf the web.

The Wood Fired Sauna / Lake / & Beach-House:

The Swedish group style sauna was constructed in the mid 1980s out of hand hewn logs. Heated by a wood stove and conveniently situated on the large spring fed lake for cooling off.
The Wood fired sauna has 3 tiers of seating for at least 30 people to enjoy simultaneously.
Leave the heat of the sauna and cool off in the clear waters of the sandy bottom lake.
Community Bon-fire most Saturday nights by the Beach-House.

Cacapon River Access / Capon Bridge Town:

Bring your canoe / kayak / flat bottom boat / or inner-tube for both the Lake at Buffalo Gap and for use on the Cacapon River
Cacapon River access near town of Capon Bridge, just 5 miles away. This shallow, crystal clear river is perfect for swimming and playing.
While in town, visit one of the many restaurant and eateries.

Bathroom Facilities / Showers / Water / Electricity / Laundry:

Bathroom Facilities Bathroom facilities for campers and day-users consist of port-a-potties which are cleaned and sanitized professionally each Tuesday. Cabins all have sinks/commodes.
Showers Separate men's and women's shower house with sinks and hot water are operational and located behind the uphill cabins. Please use environmentally friendly soaps and shampoos. Shower House Details / Photos - click here
Electricity is currently available in all cabins and all facility buildings. Campsites and Primitive RV-sites do not have electricity.
County water / Well Wateris available at stations located thoroughout the camp. All cabins have potable water supplies.
Laundry is only available ... -- please use bio-degradable, eco-friendly laundry detergent.

Parking / Handicap Access:

Parking / Roads: Roads are gravel and are graded frequently for conditioning.

Handicap Access: Most Campsites, RV-sites and down hill cabins are relatively handi-cap friendly.

Campground Quiet Hours:
Please refrain from unnecessary noise and disturbances in the Camp from 10:00pm to 8:00am. This includes keeping voices low in cabins, when passing by campsites and cabins, and not playing loud music and keeping down conversations around late night campfires. Thank you.

Firewood Policy:
$5.00 per container load. Generous sized heavy grade plastic containers are available at the firewood piles. Please return containers to firewood pile after use. Several piles throughout the Camp.
Pay at the Registration / Check-In kiosk in the Dining Hall.

Foraging is Free: Collect and gather fallen wood debris as available.
Do NOT cut down live trees or branches from live trees.
