Rules and Cautions

at Buffalo Gap Camp


  1. Camping Season: The Camp is open from April 15 to November 1 annually.


  2. Registration - Check-In / Liability Waiver:
    Self Serve / Honor System Registration and Check-In are located at the Kiosk / Bulletin Board in the Camp Dining Hall -- all fees paid here, via a remittance envelope, into a secure mailbox mounted on the bulletin board wall. The remittance envelope requires a signature and acknowdelgement and agreement to the posted Camp Rules and Regulations.
    Do Check In, sign Liability-Cautions Waiver Envelope, and pay all fees immediately upon arrival.


  3. Check-In / Check-Out Time:
    Cabin and Campsite check-out time is by 12:00 noon while check-in time is 3:00pm or later.

  4. Drugs / Cigarettes / Alchohol:
    1. Buffalo Gap Camp is a substance free (drug free) facility. Drug use is not tolerated here.
    2. If you must smoke, all cigarette butts must be pocketed or burned -- please do not litter or risk forest fires.
    3. While alcohol is allowed in moderation, public drunkenness will not be tolerated and you will be asked to leave.
    4. All beer / alcohol must be consumed in cups or with cozy's -- please do not display beer cans or bottles in public.


  5. Quiet Hours: Quiet hours are from 10:00pm to 8:00am. During this time, we ask that all guests keep voices and music down, even when walking past campsites or cabins during Quiet hours. For complaints, please contact campground management.


  6. Swim / Play / Hike at Your Own Risk:No Lifeguard on Duty. Swimming in the Lake and playing on the rocks or in the waters of the creek/streams and utilizing all aspects of the property is at your own risk.


  7. Never Swim or Hike Alone: No Lifeguard on Duty. Due to the risks of getting hurt or drowning, never swim or play in the waters of Buffalo Gap Camp alone. Further, due the risks of getting hurt or running into wild animals, never hike far from camp alone.


  8. Deep Water: Be careful of unexpectedly (abrupt) deep water in the Lake, especially off the dock at the Sauna or mid-Lake.


  9. Flash Floods: For your safety, abandon water front campsites along Cold Stream Creek during prolonged heavy rains (> 2 inches of rain in one day) as flash floods can happen quickly and unexpectedly.


  10. Pets: All dogs must be on a leash at all times. Please clean up after your pet and dispose of waste properly in our provided waste recepticles. Thanks.


  11. Fishing: Due to the dangers of hooks in bathers feet, we do not allow fishing in our Lake.


  12. Fighting / Violence / Vulgarity: Buffal Gap Camp is a family campground and as such, any guest provoking a fight, using obsessive provocative language or being violent will be escorted out of the camp property by security.


  13. Sauna: the Sauna is available 24/7 for all to use and for all to build and maintain the woodstove fire.
    Sauna Rules and Guidelines are posted in the Sauna. Caution: wood fired stove and vent pipe are extremely hot.
    Also, the waters off of the dock at the sauna are deep. If you cannot swim, stay out of the Lake.
    First Aid and Rescue equipment are located in the changing area of the sauna.


  14. Camp Fire Dangers: Camp fires at pre-approved park, tent, and cabin sites are welcome so long as the following conditions are met:
    1. Stone fire circle pits must have been created by or approved by camp management and there must be proper clearance above the fire pit so as not to catch overhead tree branches on fire from drifting sparks / flames.
    2. Area around fire pit must be cleared down to mineral soil for a minimum distance of 10 feet around what is being burned.
    3. Fires must be extinguished when departing and fires must be attended at all times.
    4. If your fire escapes, you are liable for costs of fighting the fire and any damage the fire may cause to otherse, so please exercise good judgement and caution.
    5. Please maintain and improve stone fire pits for future campers.
    Note: Fire Extinguishers are maintained at all buidlings throughout Camp.
    Should a fire ever get out of control, please call 911 and then notify camp management.


  15. No Large RV's or Campers: Buffalo Gap Camp cannot accomodate large campers or RV's at this time.


  16. Emergency Telephone Service on Premises: Emergency telephones are available at the Beach House by the Lake and at the Manager's Office (see camp map).


  17. Carry Out Trash & Recycle: The camp trash dumpster is located along the main road just past Swisher Hall Gymnnasium.
    Do carry out your trash and dispose of it in the dumpster. Recycling is not available on premises but encouraged.


  18. Don't Harm Nature Please don't harm living trees (do not cut for firewood), mosses, ferns, fungus, mushrooms or other living organisms or creatures in the forest.


  19. No Fire-arms / No Hunting: Hunting is prohibited on the Camp property. Also, all fire arms are prohibited at the camp.


  20. Never Dive Head First: Diving into water head first can lead to paralysis and death as well as broken necks and damaged spinal columns or brain damage. Never dive head first into stream waters.


  21. Young Children: Young children (under age 14) must be attended by adults at all times.


  22. Put Away Food: It is recommended that you do put away all food at night either back in your vehicle or tied up high on a rope overhanging a tree limb or in secure containers. This will limit raccoons, possums, and possibly bears from hanging around people's camps.


  23. Not Responsible for Lost / Stolen Items: Management / Buffalo Gap Camp is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Secure all valuables in a locked vehicle or leave them at home.


  24. Yellow Jacket / Wasp Stings: Yellow Jacket (hornet) and Wasp nests have been found on the Camp property in places (and then exterminated).
    If stung by a bee or hornet, leave area immediately and then report location so that nest can be exterminated.


  25. Water quality: While the spring waters of Buffalo Gap Camp are rich in minerals and abundant with aquatic life, it is recommended that you do not drink the waters at Buffalo Gap Camp as it may contain water born parasites, bacteria, or other elements that urbanized digestive systems are not used to.
